Thank You Dennis Great report and I really like the details and observations part. Sometimes I believe people figure fishing is mostly luck and refuse to do there home work or even who are open to learning something new each day. Serous fisherpersons know better and are open to new ideas. I was out on spillway hump last week with one other boat, we were catching fish pretty good on spinners and doing some experimenting with some slab spinners. There was a very nice fellow fishing by himself I had saw him earlier in the top water action that happen down the lake He was fishing(at the spot I had left from only 30 minutes earlier) and doing much better than all of us combined and he was hooking twice as many Hybrids fishing all by himself even though their were 4 of us in our boat. He was fishing a much larger bait too, which got my attention it looked like a 4 or 5 inch sassy shad. The 5 inch Sassy shad is my go to bait most of the spring and fall months until water really gets hot and fish get picky. Only thing I could see that may have made a difference in his was his technique and also that it made a very small splash so I assume it was very light weight jig head or had a internal weight like the ones a lot of bass fisherman use, either way it was working very well so it for sure got my interest. .. Nice baits Pastor John.

Got Pastor John's Mepps #2 heavier replicas in the mail today and slipped out on Saint Annes Point about 7PM to try them out. Marked fish in 12 fow and caught 2 or 3 with Mepps #2. Then tied John's #2 with gold body to a line and noticed it had difficulty starting to spin. So I put the 2 slight bends in the wire like I do on the Mepps 2 and cast again. Caught 9 straight without a miss. See pic below of one of them. After that it got too dark to do any more testing - i.e. the one with the red body. The great thing about this is that it's heavy enough to cast and get to the bottom quickly without adding a weight up the line. John, you have a winner here!!! Mucho thanks!

Great report Dennis. Can you elaborate on the bends you mentioned. Thanks

Dennis, I can pre bend the wire if you wish. Just tell me what bends to make. Thank you for the report, it looks great! From the picture it looks like you put about a 20 degree bend between the weight and the brass bead. I cant tell what the other bend is.

I observed a few years back that a #2 Mepps sometimes has trouble starting to spin immediately upon beginning the retrieve. I discovered that if I use my fingers and put about a 10 degree bend in the wire at the end of the body closest to the line and then about a 5 to 10 degree bend in the wire in the opposite direction just behind where the line is tied, it causes the Mepps 2 to spin immediately upon retrieval. I think it also creates slightly more drag making it easier to feel the #2 spinning. Yesterday I had this same problem with John's #2 and the wire bends fixed it. John, I would rather make the bends myself, so I'd prefer you leave the wire straight.

It sounds like those bends remove any water interference above and below the blade, putting the blade in undisturbed water.

I wonder if the same thing could be done with a #4? I found better clevises that will keep the top of the blade closer to the wire.
