hey. does anybody have any tips on how to keep gar from ruining your fishing? once the gars roll in the fish you are fishing.. a few days ago i drove to ok to go fishing with my cousin in waurika lake... we went to one of his old honey holes... maybe 4 minutes after we cast out he pulled in a bluecat. i missed a great bite while netting the 15 lb blue cat for him... no worries, my other rod got a bite less than a minute later... i caught the 7 lb or so blue cat.. then had a nice blue pull off... on the small end it was 20-25 lbs... he then caught one that was between 10-12 lbs... all of this within about 20-25 minutes... then we waited about 10 minutes... nothing... after that 10 minutes we each got the typical gar bite. a few pecks followed by a light pressure that would slowly move the bait.. you all know how gars bite im sure... anyway, our trip was ruined before it could really get started... all because the gars came in and ran the other fish off... does anybody have any tips on how to keep the gars away, or keep the cats/blues/bass/crappie etc around when the gars decide to come on in? one thing ive thought about and noticed is anytime i bait out a hole with my soured milo i dont have issues with gars... ever... has anybody else noticed the same thing? or have you figured out something else to control the situation? ive seen ppl ticked off kill the gars they caught... something that i would never do... if there is any tricks to keeping them away, id love to hear it... and maybe the word should be spread... maybe the baiting out a hole is the trick. maybe an abnormal amount of the fish such as cats schooled together keeps gars from intruding or by comfort in numbers(schooling) the cats wont take off when the gar come join the party... im not sure, but i dont think its a coincidence that when i bait out holes the gar are no issue and when i dont bait out the same spots they are often over run by gar.... anyway, id be interested to hear what all you have to say

If I start getting gar bites on a baited hole I change baits. I have never caught a gar on stink bait. Of course blues and gar seem to bite cut and live bait well.

well, with this current spot the shad are there so thick they jump when the boat goes into the cove.... so the gar will be coming in anyway... for whatever reason, when the gar show up it flushes the other fish...

The gar do not chase the other fish away. I've caught plenty of cats between gar bites. The gar are just more aggressive than cats when it comes to biting a baited hook.

All I would know would to be have several holes baited, and when the gar come in, move to the next one.
