I would be interested to hear the opinions of the forum on this subjsct. from the pros ,the intermediates ,the beginners , everyone included .... lets discuss the vision of a crappie the vision of a crappie is best straight forward and the peripheral on one is very high as well the rods are in high concentration similar to a whitetail deer or at least according to the research I have done that's what I think I know .... so lets hear any and all other information that might be out there ....and ... thanks in advance for your input

Me thinks I think crappie are ambush predators, not pursuit predaors lacking speed and endurance. I believe wide angle short range [fish eye lens] visionserves them best.white bass and such probably have bino vision. Or Icould be wrong.

I think they have a keen sense of seeing well. They are a predator fish and thus need to actively search for food instead of it coming to them. I think they see the colors based on the water clarity, depth and sunlight out and they see the shape of the jigs as minnows or insects they can feed on. I would say their sense of seeing is only flawed by the fact they don't feed down and usually only feed on what's in front or above them.

I think the little stinkers can see me before I even leave the boat ramp. Depending if they are prey or predator a lot of animals eyes focus on movement rather than clarity or sharpness. A fish I don't know about, but this is an interesting thread for sure.

#1.I think they have a keen sense of seeing well. #2.They are a predator fish and thus need to actively search for food instead of it coming to them. #3.I think they see the colors based on the water clarity, depth and sunlight out and they see the shape of the jigs as minnows or insects they can feed on. #4.I would say their sense of seeing is only flawed by the fact they don't feed down and usually only feed on what's in front or above them. Statement #1 is correct. #2 Is both correct & incorrect in that crappie are predators & do actively search for food at times, but they are also ambush feeders at times, hiding, waiting for a meal to pass by within range. Statement #3 is also correct but statement #4 is incorrect as I have, on a number of occasions, picked crappie off the bottom, with mud or red clay on their belly, after dragging a jig through or holding it still that mud or clay. In other words, IMHO, they are SNEAKY LI'L BUGGERS!!

Very good article! Thanks for sharing! Side Note: Helps me understand a little why certain color jigs work one day and not at all the next! Sight and water clarity go hand in hand!

And from what i have watched on my sonar, I have seen crappie follow my jig down and snatch it right up and into my livewell. Granted that is not often but i do think they will chase down if it passes them to quickly.

Well my pet crappie, I have had for several years told me he had eyes equal to an eagle! In clear water he said he could see a jig up to 30 foot, in off color about 20 foot, in dirty water about 10 foot. He said he could see colors through the whole spectrum! That's why some days black and chartreuse works, then the next day he might want junebug and yellow. He also said he can feel the slight vibrations of a jig being jigged from 15 foot. He got a kick out of the fact, people think he will not feed down on a bait. He said to ask you people if you hold your food above your head, when you eat. He said if the bait is in the water and he sees or feels it, he is going to eat it, before one of his buddies beat him to it!!!!! These are his thoughts , I am just the messenger!!!!!!
I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

I fell they have great vision & their lateral line is very sensitive which helps them with their peripheral.... I also fell they will feed from on top of the water to off the bottom..... I also fell matching your jig to the water color & at times going with a color that stand out from the water color works.... I fell the better fish prefer colors that blend into the water color which tells me their lookers (eyes) work purdy dadgum good!!! That's just my opinion, a person that can catch a crappy evar-now-&-then.....

That's my first summer crappie. I primarily fish shallow ponds and it's like crappie disappear when the pond gets to a certain temperature. The pond where this one came out of was a little deeper. In addition to the crappie, I caught and released 20 bass of varying sizes.
