Before the fish kills, was anyone catching any crappie? I lived in Teague when the lake first opened and for 6 years we caught loads of 2 pound crappie with an occasional 3 pounder. But the biologists where worried because there were no small crappie being caught, I left the area in 1979 and have wondered if the crappie fishing continued or died like Fayette.

I used to fish Fairfield many, many moons ago. After I left the area, I heard the redfish were doing well.

Link to the latest report on Fairfield above.

I received this link along with the email below at the 1st of the month when I inquired about any updates to the stocking programs or provisions to prevent the fish kills. I don't recall any mention of Crappie in the report above, but it's been a month since I read it.

"We have not had any additional fish kills reported on Lake Fairfield yet this year. However, given the cloudy weather we have experienced this week I would not be surprised to receive a report this weekend. We have prepared some recommendations for corrective measures that Luminant could take to mitigate the nutrient concentration issues causing the fish kill. These recommendations have been submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for use as part of the updated effluent permit for Lake Fairfield but I am unaware of the status of the revised permit at this time."

So I guess the crappie, even those stocked since 1979 are gone. Same thing at Fayette.

The stocking report said they stocked Nile perch in the 80's. Oh man, how much fun would that have been if they had taken hold.

Same thing at Martin Creek. I used to catch some huge crappie there but they are about non-existant now. TPW has no plans to re-stock citing that nobody fishes for crappie on Martin Lake. realmad

You must admit this makes perfect sense. People stop catching crappie on Martin Creek so they stop fishing for crappie there. TPW then refuses to restock the crappie since nobody fishes for crappie there. bolt

There is some relation between power plant lakes and crappie not spawning. I see that Coleto Creek is suddenly producing no undersized fish in the TP&W survey.

That's kinda like not putting oil in a leaking engine anymore. if there's none in it, it won't leak!

That's a darn shame. Martin Creek used to be a great Crappie lake. And, it was a nice lake to fish.

It's still a very good lake to fish for bass and cats. The latest creel survey showed a very low crappie population. The biologist explained the crappie spawning cycle about having a few good spawns followed by a few bad spawns and felt like Martin was just going through the bad spawns. If so, it's been a long dry spell for the crappie.

That's what a tilapia is...Nile perch
They eat goooooooood!!!

Very few crappie in FF. None have been stocked since early days of the lake. Crappie don't like power plant lakes.
