but let me make it perfectly clear the BIG river crappie fish paid dearly for the insult the other day !
I thought I had a really good day a month er so ago down on the ole Trinity river
and in the last few weeks its been a struggle to land a good one
Friday I had 3 nice fish escape me ...
recently only lil bitty crappie fish have been the norm ...
but today was an episode well worth the price of admission
why they were there ? probably bait ?
why nothing else was biting ? your guess is as good as mine
to be sure lots of lips got holes today
not an under in the bunch
and both black / white and sum nice mohawks were after it EVERY cast !
a full hour plus of hook setting and crankin in nice fat crappie
sure got my fix today ....

Ketchn is as good a story teller as he is a fisherman so he knows how to build suspense to showcase his crappie ketchn skills.

let me start off with a word to the wise

they keep giving me false reads
maybe its the heat ...I dunno .....
but I do know this ....water you a toad and he will ....

it was back and forth black hog to white hog kinda day in a big way

I took maybe half the pictures I could have pretty easily
so you will have to excuse the first set of hog crappie tiny photos
ran flat out of phone memory
but know worries I managed quite few better quality photos before I ran low on memory

and like I said before ....back and forth 50 50 black hog to white hog kinda mix today

ridiculous ketchn on steroids flat out no kiddin round
once I found the groove it was just unimaginable
I tried several presentations before I found the true want of the fish
and let me tell you ....once I found the right color combination
and the sweet spot behind the underwater concrete ....
it was terribly on fire
I took fish on several baits today in various colors and combos
they all had a similar trend ...
I will go into all that later
time for another selfie

Nice fish "Ketchn"!

so here is the scoop .....I originally had a tandem tied on
2 ,,,,1/32 oz yella heads with red eyes with summer fry grasshopper thermocline small frys on em
got a peck first cast and nothing after that !
well I noticed the water clarity and kept thinkin I am sure there is a crappie or 2 to be ketched
I lost 3 nice fish Friday right at this spot ...the other person pitching across the river
told me from the opposite side of the river nothing much was happening
I told him good bye as he left and dug in my pocket
I pulled out 2 small fry in monkey milk and exchanged bodies
first pitch ....KABOOM
big ole fat hog crappie comes to my hand after a bit of a struggle

well I lost that set up a pitch or so later
so I went pink head with my remaining munky milk bods
and KABOOM sum more

and some more as well ....

now mind ya I tried to float fish these here crappie
NO DICE ....I missed several and for whatever reason they wouldn't actually commit to good bite
just a fast peck and gone .....
and I know from being here many times in the past
a pitch and drag in the ole river is asking to donate a jig
I have very limited tackle with me ....this isn't looking good
I have 2 or 3 jig heads left ....the fish are wanting to play
and I am down to maybe 4 or 5 thermocline bait bodies
so after a half dozen or so on the red 1/32 witht the munky milk ...

I was forced into submission and said good bye to that set up on the underwater debris

good thing I got a photo or 3 I am thinkin

side note : notice the crappie fishes mouth were it escaped a previous angler

I may have some of the photos a bit out of order
so please excuse the back and forth on what bait
in the end thru forced submission I found the REAL bait
I was down to 2 pink heads 1/16 oz and some new test baits thermocline sent me
a stinger type plastic in a charcoalish body with a silverfish tail
I think its called natural shad ?
anyway ....BAIT OF CHOICE has been located !

and the really good news ....the crappie fish located it over and over as well

sure was some serious fun yawl
a single 1/16 jig no nibbles and a pitch as far as you can cast
let it drop onto the channel side of the concrete pile
and never move the bait ! let it slowly fall and let the wind slightly drag it to deeper water
when the line tightens up and you are sure you hung the concrete ...
rare back on the ole rod like surf ketcher and stretch that mono like a rubber band
set the hook like ya mean it and crank like crazy ....
its a mighty long way back to the spot your standing
lost 4 or 5 on the surface because of the long haul
but man oh man is long distance pitching for crappie a BLAST
KABOOM

they sure enough wanted this set up like ya dream of
bite after bite every "accurate" cast got bit
fun fun in the shade on a hot day for sure

I ran low on phone memory towards the end of this episode
and I truly regret not getting better quality photos of the mohawks
one was even saddle backed just a bit by its dorsal fin
very pretty fish

cant quite remember if I managed 2 or 3 on them Mohawk fishes ....
but I got a few small photos

note the far column in the water way across the river
parallel to that column straight in front of my perch
was the open water ticket
and man oh man were they there

got a few more photos not in any particular order
man what a day to go ketchn

not sure how many I landed ....around 30 plus I am sure
lost a few on top
and a few on the hook sets
had few escape me on the concrete before the photo opps as well
its a precarious situation on the concrete and a tough place to visit
but on this particular day it was well worth the effort to scramble down the incline
pick the beggar burs off your arms and pants
wipe the sweat off the brow
and get ready to set the hook

KABOOM
side note : the natural shad in the mister fry is going on a dunkin episode soon
if there is a bit of water clarity ....you should think about dunkin one yourself
the stinger version was flat out a ketchn machine bigtime ....

I'm certain that I had me a Big Ol' Bag of assorted baits in the test color Natural Shad, but I haven't been able to locate them
I looked for them the last 2 times I was out to test, but NADA

She will have to run another batch so I can test them here
