I have a boat that my dad gave me to fix up. The title is in his name and I was wondering if I have to have the title in my name if the insurance policy is in my name??

You will want to have him sign it over to you. Other wise you have no insurable interest. Thanks

If he signs the title over to me is that enough or do I have to have the title in my name?? The registration on the boat is good for another year so I was going to avoid paying taxes at the moment if possible.

You can insure it now but if you wreck it they will check ownership before they write you a check.

Typically on any insured item, you can get yourself listed as the primary insured party (presumably so you're covered for liability in case you cause damage to someone else). Then you have the titled owner listed on the insurance as 'additional insured' party, same as your car lender or mortgage lender gets listed on those types of insurance.

That way your dad is covered as well.

If you insure it not title in your name, they will just cut the check to the titled owner (your dad) in the event of a claim. As long as you aren't worried about that being the situation, no issues at all leaving it in his name.

call the insurance co an tell them you want to insure a boat motor an trailer that is not in your name see what they say. if your dad is giving it to you their is a place on the form for a gift transfer for s small fee it would be better an relieve your dad of any liabilitys that could happen.
