Coming from the Northwest and Central California, most of my rods are Salmon/Steelhead and trout rods. I have plenty of bait casting reels that I used for salmon (Abu 6501 and 5501) that I can use for cats, but I know the rods might not be a good choice.
What length and actions or brand and styles of rod are you using for catfish, either from shore or boat?

Medium heavy ugly sticks in 7 and 8 foot are great trophy bluecat rods. I know one guide on here really really likes the 7'6 steel head rod for channel catfishing!

I have 10 Berkley 7ft MH big game rods, I love them. They seem to work just right for the blues.I have several other but none work as well as the Berkley. As an added plus, they are 20 bucks.

The 7' MH roughnecks from academy are pretty good for $20. The ProAnglers are the best.

I love my medium heavy white ugly stick catfish rods. If I were to try anything else it would be pro anglers or team catfish thunder cat rods.

I use pro angler rods in med and med hvy, good tough rods that doesn't break the bank, I recently acquired a whisker seeker rod and I have to admit that I am pretty impressed with the rod and the way it feels, I haven't had it very long so after I catch some good fish and a trophy or two on it I can give a better opinion on it but so far it looks like it is going to be a real good rod

I've been using Pro Angler Tackle MH and Med rods for several years. Main thing is to just go. Take what you got now and then try out a few different kinds and see what you like. Good luck and have fun.

I use old Eagle Claw salmon rods with old mitchel reals they are perfect they were give to my by my grandfather and they are still going strong. I lived in Washington State till I was 17, all my cafishing gear is either salmon or steal head rods and reals. besides the couple I used for Musky fishing While I lived in New York.

depends on where you're fishing. River or lake. And also. It's alot of personal preference. I personally use all meat hunter customs. Great reliable rods. And at a affordable price. Just type in meat hunter fishing rods at Google. I believe it's like rfsports.com or something like that. And they have a massive selection and variety for every different type of preferences. You can also email them and they can custom make a rod for you all the way from handle to to the color. To the wraps. To the eyelets. Etc

Mad Catter,
Looking at mainly lakes from boat or shore.

Thanks for the inputs everyone. I guess we'll try with the gear already on hand and see where that takes us.

What you have will work EXCELLENT most don't know about steelhead rods and especially the 8'-6". I have, and use, some of the same rods you have. If you like heavy(as in heavy weight) the Whoppin sticks and other eglass rods will fit right in. In the event you don't like how the steelhead rods work-I'm a buyer!
