Taking my son to Canyon Lake for his 15th Birthday this weekend. He wants to cliff dive and do a little striper fishing!

Are the lake levels up enough for cliff diving?

We have never fished the lake. We have learned allot about striper fishing from Lake Livingston Adventures and would like to try our luck... What are the best methods for catching them this time of year? What depth of water should I plan to target them right now? What methods are working best now? Where can I find some nice gizzard shad with my cast net? Any info will help greatly! We only go to the lake once a year, so dont worry about me stealing your honey holes! Thanks!!!!

There are plenty of cliffs to dive from on Canyon Lake with very deep water. Can't help u much with the fishing.

How come I keep catching small fish when every product I buy is supposed to catch more and bigger fish?

Can't give you any help on the cliff diving, but the the lake is like 10'
below reguler pool. That is not bad for Canyon. Where there is cliffs there
are big under water bolders also so be careful. Striper fishing is tough in
Canyon. If you plan on fishing live bait, catch you some perch with worms.
Shad are almost impossible to catch, with all the rocky bottom and gin clear
water. As far as spots for striper, try the shelf by the dam and overlook
park and the humps out in front of the dam. Hope this helps.

My advise is not to fish! We caught one catfish while slabbing and had to buy worms so my daughter could Catch something!

Try around cranes mill from where the river comes into lake and back north like you are headed back to the main lake. It's a little muddy up there but you can catch stripers just off the river channel most will be small. 18 to 22 inches. I have seen two 16 lb plus stripers caught in the past couple years.

What's the weight roughly of a 22-24" striper?

I want to thank this forum, another forum, and the skills I've learned from Lake Livingston Adventures! These guys have totally changed the way I fish and I have caught more fish this year than I have caught in my life time! They are incredible guides! Give them a call and you will not be dissapointed.

http://www.lakelivingstonadventures.com/

I got on the lake around 10am and cliff dove with my kids at party cove for several hours, then pulled the tube and knee board around. The family finally let me fish from 6:30-8pm. I didnt get the net or anything ready, not thinking I was going to catch fish in 1.5hours. Boy was I wrong... I set up over a cloud of fish I found on the side imaging that turned out to be whites. I played with them for a while, but after a few, I had enough and went to look for striper. I moved around the area for about 30min and spotted a big cloud of bait with streaks in it on the side imaging. I set up over it and it looked like busted bait with striper all under it on the 2D sonar. I dropped a chartruse silver flash 1.5oz TNT 180 slab down there and before it hit the bottom, BAM! Striper on! I fished this school with my son for about 20min and boated (7) striper from 20-21". I was so excited and panicing trying to get plyers, net, and towels ready! I also still had the binimi top up and in the way! We would have easily caught more, but just wasnt ready. I had one that really pulled drag good and made a long run. I tried handing the rod to my daughter, but she was scared from all of the excitment and wouldnt take the rod. I felt the fish shake the hook due to slack from not reeling, but as soon as the slab was spit, another striper picked it up! Crazy! I just wish I would have landed that one! It was so cool to see fish 8-10' down below the water for a change. I am use to fishing conroe and livingston. My anchor light would not work for some reason, so I had to head in after the school fizzled out instead of searching for them again. Cant wait to get back out there one day!

Thanks Guys!
