One of the most secluded places I love to fish is the West Nueces River. I had the chance to fish that river the other morning and the bite was good. I fished a couple of hours and caught several bass in the 12 to 13 inch range. Some nice Longear in the 6 and 7 inch range,and two Common Carp that were a couple of pounds each. One of my goals for that morning trip was to catch a trophy Rio and apply for the Rio Grande Cichlid Catch&Release Record. I achieved my goal and caught two trophy Rios. One going at 9 inches even and the other going at 9.50 inches. Paper work on the 9.50" Rio will be completed and sent off to Austin. All fish were caught on the bait of champions "WORMS"! Both bottom and float techniques were used and all fish were released to fight again. Spending a nice overcast morning on a very secluded river in the Great South West. It just don't get any better!

One after another you are on those paperworks pretty good !

Thanks Mike, "CK",and Robert for the replies! Robert: I really wanted to get that catch&release record for the West Nueces River. I don't get many chances to fish there. I tried twice last year and did not even catch a Rio. Got lucky this time.

Congratulations on your catch. The picture of the river and all those weeds brings one thing to mind...chiggers. I got into them twice in the past month.

Thanks "CK and "DataHawk" for the replies. "DataHawk": Oh yea there are some chiggers out there for sure. I always bring a can of "OFF" with me while fishing those remote areas during the late spring and summer months. I also ware snake leggins.

Side Note: Are the Rio patterns any different in that area compared to Dunlap and the Hill Country areas?

Thanks "Moon River" and "Gitter" for the replies! "Gitter": The patterns are just about the same. Fish seem to be spawning and sitting on nest just about during the same times. Also catching em in shallow water. They are also hard to find if not impossible to find during the late fall through winter.

Chuck, your relentless persuit of the ever ellucid (sp) Rio amazes me . Your shear determination is compelling . Congrats on the New Record. I told Bob I'm gonna have to leave at about 2a.m. and be at the Burger King by 6 a.m. and go make the Rio run with you again . Thanks Mutt for the reply. I always look forward to late spring. I know the Rios will on the move. From late spring through mid fall you have a GREAT chance to catch a Rio in south Texas and the hill country. It is one of my favorite fish to find and catch!




Side Note: Saw you saltwater catch on another thread. Thinking about a "ROAD TRIP" .

Yes Sir "Gitter" love fishing that river when I get the opportunity. Nice quiet place to relax and fish.

Good friend of mine was in Delrio last week. He said the Kinney Co. area got some decent showers the past week. Also Uvalde got a lot of rain.
