For the past several years, we have caught many very nice Sunfish/Bluegills from Lake Austin. On an Average morning, my wife and I would keep 50 or more fish with many very large ones. This year we have fished 4-5 times and our best day we may have caught a dozen fish. I am not sure if we are just doing something wrong or if it is because the Grass Carp have eaten every bit of vegetation and the Sunfish are easy picking for the bass and catfish. Anyone doing better the us ????

I have fished Lake Austin a lot over the years. I have not fished there this year but plan on fishing it in the very near future. The times I have fished there I have always did very good. Caught numerous large Redbreast and some super nice Bluegill. I loved fishing by those grass beds. The last time I was on Lake Austin, I and my buddies noticed a big decrease in the grass beds. You may have a point! Side Note: I did get a recent report from a good friend of mine who fished Lake Austin last week and he and his friend did very well on the Sunfish. He said they caught good numbers of nice Redbreast and Bluegill. Caught em in 17 to 24 feet of water throwing small jigs towards the shore line.

Thanks for the encouraging information. Tuesday morning I will try something similar to what your friends were doing.......In the past, this time of the year, it seems that we caught them around docks. Maybe the ski boats sent them for cover of the deep as there are no weeds to buffer the wave action. Thanks again, Larry

Lake Austin is one super lake. Love fishing there in early October and the early spring. I wished that the Grass Carp were not stocked. It defiantly did not help the fishing. Side Note: Let us know how you do!

Fished Lake Austin twice. Once by boat and the other by Kayak. Both times were during last spring. Did well on both days. Caught some very nice Redbreast in 20 feet of water fishing the drop offs. There are still some good sunfish in that lake. Side Note: Great place to fish!
