I have searched the web for a video or step by step pictures/instructions for replacing the PA 12 rudder with the new upgraded one. I removed the cover over the rudder housing but it is not clear what needs to be done to drop the rudder shaft so I can replace the original rudder. Can anyone help me with this?

There are a few videos that show how on youtube. I will see if I can find one for you . The only tough part is getting the screw out of the rudder itself because it has loctite on it. What year is your PA12?

It's a 2013 PA12. I appreciate any help in finding instructions. I must be using the wrong search criteria because I couldn't find anything on the PA. I plan to use a heat gun to soften/melt the locktite on the screw and remove with my impact driver. I just need to know how to drop the shaft.

Take the screw out of the top of it and remove the drum. Just move it with out taking the lines loose. There will be a pin holding the rudder shaft in that you can use a screwdriver and a small hammer to knock out so far then grab with some pliers

Note - I recently did mine and added a waterproof grease (Bel-Ray made primarily for motorcycles) to the rudder shaft and was surprised how much smoother it made the operation.
The screw holding the rudder to the shaft came off easily on mine using normal force without heating/etc. Just put the rudder in a vise to hold it so you can get a Philips screwdriver on once side and bladed on the other. Be sure to use proper sized screwdrivers so you don't distort the screws in the process. Use red Loctite on re-assembly.
Other - the knot on the rudder line was next to impossible to get undone - mine looked like it was possibly heated. I found that there is enough length to just cut the knot leaving as much line as possible and then retie. YMMV but you can check by just lowering rudder and seeing how much slack you have to play with.

I gave up on locating a video or pictures for replacing the rudder on a PA12. I finally just decided to try it on my own. Here is how you drop the shaft to replace the rudder with the upgraded, larger version. Remove the cover and you will see the rudder steering hub that the shaft is attached to. There are two Philips head screws holding the cables to turn left/right and a screw in the middle with an allen wrench head. Use a 1/8 inch allen wrench to remove the screw. After removing the allen screw, move the steering control out of the way without loosening the steering cables. Push the pin out of the upper part of the shaft and pull it out of the hole from the bottom. Note: We had no issues removing the screws from the rudder. We used a flat screwdriver and a battery powered impact driver. We DID have an issue putting the screws back on the new rudder. After about 5 minutes of fumbling with it, we discovered that the hole on the rudder was undersized and the flat heat screw assembly would not go through. We used a inch drill and it then fit perfectly. I replaced a rudder on another PA12 and did not encounter this issue, but you may want to watch for this.

Hmmmm, mine is different -I wish I had taken pics. Mine did not have the allen wrench screw holding the drum on but rather had the pressure fit pin on top - driving out that pin dropped the rudder assembly.
Edit - FWIW, mine is a 2013 PA14. I'll take pics next time I am out at the shop.

Other - I also had a problem getting the pin back into the new rudder........until I realized one side of the hole on the rudder was larger than the other and putting the pin in from the other side worked.

Interesting, I swear Dan and I tried it from both sides, not really thinking that but more of a here let me try it and see if I can get it while the other held it. Now I wish we would have seen if that would have worked.

Great post Tatanka54. There are two types of rudder drums so its a little confusing. Mine is like yours and I also had trouble getting the pin back in. I tried mine out this weekend and I think it works better now. I used to have dead steering for quite a few feet but now it seems to start steering a lot sooner. It is also a little more sensitive to little adjustments so I will have to get used to that.

This is what mine looks like (not my pic but one on the world web): Interesting that they would have made 2 styles. I only have one trip on the new rudder - saw improvement overall but really helpful when attempting to go from a deadstop and turn upwind. You still have to get flow across the rudder as with any rudder system but fluttering the rudder helps with that as well and the additional surface area helps start the turn sooner.
