I was just wondering where to go surf fishing. I live really close to Galveston so is it a good idea to go there?

Hopefully you will get additional, more specific advice from experts on this forum, as I have found converting to freshwater to saltwater is a lot tougher than I imagined, but making some progress.

I went down to Galveston yesterday and fished the surf for about 30 minutes (spent the rest with my 4 y/o). I was surprised to catch a Spanish Mackerel, which put up a nice fight on 12 lb test on a bass rod. It was certainly a thrill. Sorry no photos as I used a disposable camera.

My strategy was to drive down seawall boulevard westward and pull over at a beach access point. Tried to find a more remote location. Walked the beach for a little and started fishing. I consider myself lucky with a bit of skill. I found this nice website which tells you some of the better fishing times:

Best fishing times for Galveston

PM me if you want to know anything else about my trip. I have fished Galveston before, with a little success.

long stringers when the water is muddy... or you can whip the black tips off with your pole.

Right now you can use a bottom rig with fish bites or FRESH dead shrimp for big whiting and pompano, both very good to eat.
Below is for trout, that is all I fish for unless I take some kids
From an earlier post, it is how I do it for trout late spring through fall. Tips: Piggy perch are best but live shrimp will work. With piggys you will catch bigger trout and maybe a red. With live shrimp you will catch trout, maybe a red and lots of whiting and skipjacks. Free line your bait using a barrel swivel and a leader and change your bait often. Cast INTO the current (usually into the wind)! Let it run JUST past you and cast again. Start at the 1st gut then move to the second if you strike out. Watch out for sting rays and shuffle your feet.
I use about 18 inches of 17lb. fluorocarbon tied to a kale hook (I like red hooks) tied to a barrel swivel tied to the main line. Most important; ALWAYS cast into the current and let it drift by. Dont fish down current. Some days it will be tough to cast more than 20 -30 feet into the wind but dont worry, I have caught fish just a few feet from where I am standing. To catch trout the water must be clear or at least not sandy brown. I have caught reds in very dirty water but on a bottom rig.

Common carp 26
Goldfish 9.78lb
Mirror Koi 14lb
Koi 16lb
Channel Catfish 26lbs
Blue Cat 30lb
Bass 9.5lb
