I'm looking to get into fly fishing for bass, carp, gar, whatever will eat around the upper Brazos river. I used to fly fish when I was young but probably wasn't doing it with the right type of set up. So basically I'm asking for set up as far as backing, line, leader, tippet. I'm prob going to go with a 6 or 7wt. Any answers or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Either a 6 or 7 with a WFF (weight forward floating) line ought to be a good start. I suggest hopping on over to either Bass Pro or Cabela's and visiting the fly shop. They'll get you set up within your budget, whatever that might be.

Instead of spending a lot of money on new stuff, buy you an outfit that has been used; just as good but a whole lot cheaper. I probably can fix you up; rod, line, reel, the whole ball of wax-p-

Thank you guys for the replies. I have an old fenwick 7wt but I've got my eye set on a 6wt redington at the moment. I more was wondering about backing. Maybe some lb test leader and a direction to go as far as tippet. Then get into flies.

G Love, standard backing for most freshwater applications is 20lb test. Not much needed for bass or gar, but carp can rip off some line, so maybe 150 yards of backing and a reel that has a decent disk drag with a spool (large arbor preferred) that will hold that much backing and the 7 wt WF (weight forward) line. Add a 7.5 to 9ft leader, tapered to 0x to 2x, with tippets in the 10 lb range. Flies differ for those species, but anything that simulates a baitfish (for gar and bass) or a big nymph (for carp) should work.
Mickfly Fish Friendly -- Life's too short to do it any other way
