Second, what is up with the fish being shallow this time of year? I'm seeing the same thing here on CCL. Very unusual in my experience. Cooter, TxWizzard and I were out earlier this week and caught a lot of fish in less than 10 fow with water temp at 84. Go figure. Even on the deeper docks they were way back in the 1 to 2' range and nothing deeper. This is not a second spawn and I can't see a thermocline where I've been.
Since you are the crappie guru, I'm noping you'll clear this up for us beginners????

No thermocline here either! Fresh water in July can do that!!! Maybe more coming next week!!! The back waters are full of shad feasting on what ever is growing back there now. Rains can wash agricultural fertilizers into the water causing a bloom. Strange year for sure!!! You show Cooter how to catch 'em???

Sounds as if you had a fun day. Catching dinks is also fun. But they are beautiful pictures.

I saw on T.V. last night that temperature reports are based on the temperature found in the shade. The reporter stated that you needed to add 15 degrees to the reported temperature to have the temperature in the sun.

I was not aware of this. I had always thought they would report the hottest temperature for the day, not something that was 15 degrees off.

So this is something to consider when you are on the lake.

Do what? to who?
My fish have fins... that's about all I know. lol

I saw a snippet of a picture that TP&W posted in their magazine many years ago that was turquoise/purple/violet/jade green/mother of Pearl -ish and they asked "what's it from". It was a 1 inch or so close up, but you couldn't tell what it was. Turned out to be a crappie. Every since then, I started looking really close at all the different colors in a crappie. Amazing.

Another reason to love them 'purty' fish.

I like the pictures too. Crappie are really pretty fish when they 1st come out of the water.

I kept a dozen crappie 12" to 15"s Wednesday, that I caught in 8' of water.

I think the summer sun has got the algae blooming & the shad schools are feeding big time. Just like schooling bass some schools of crappie follow the shad around the lake, even when the shad go shallow.

Looks like we may all have some more rain coming again! That jig is a Crazy Thunder Chicken. Not that something else wouldn't have worked......that one just happened to be on the pole!

I'm also a big fan of the colors that crappie display. As close to saltwater fish as you can get from fresh water
