I have always been a bass fisherman in the past but recently got stationed here in Corpus and am learning to fish the flats for reds and trout. I have noticed that almost nobody here uses a baitcaster. What is the reason for that? I have been using both my spinning set up and my bait caster with no issues so far.

Baitcasters seem to be more popular among Texans in salt. When went on a wade fishing trip years ago I used a spinning reel and my friend used baitcasters. My spinnibg reel wore me out. My shoulders and neck area were sore. Next time out I had 2 baitcasters and haven't switched back since. A lot lighter and easier to handle for me

Personal preference. I like to use straight braid when throwing soft plastics, and casting braid is easier on a spinning rod. I like mono with top waters and spoons, so I use the bait caster on them.

Most people can cast longer distance with light line and light jig heads with spinning reels. The lighter the bait the slower the fall when your fishing shallow water. I like a bait caster my self but have both.

When I'm chunking plugs, spoons, and heavy to medium jigs, I'll use a baitcaster. When the water is real shallow and the fish are skittish, I'll use unweighted plastics and a spinning reel. Nothing more frustrating than casting a light lure into the wind and backlashing right as a bunch of reds go tailing by.

I use spinning reels because I grew up fishing with them. They worked better for us when we fished the surf at night with a full moon. I haven't fished like that in years, but I can see the advantage of a spinning reel when casting into the wind which it's pretty common in the surf and even the bay based on my experience.

I grew up on the gulf coast, and I have used baitcasters all my life. It's what I learned on, and it's what I'm comfortable with. From my first Penn no. 9 to my current setup, I've always used baitcasters. I have both spinning and baitcaster. I do like having spinning reels because there is less maintenance required. I usually keep spinning reals around for friends who don't have gear and want something easy to use. I also use spinning reels for my heavier setups (surf and pier).

I am from Europe(Romania) and all my live i was fishing with spinning reels.I learn to fish in salt water about 10 year ago here in Texas and i am fishing just with artificial from the bank with long spinning rods(over 10') built by me on fly blanks +extension,or changing some fly rods,SAGE RTLX, G.LOOMIS IMX,in spinning rods. I never was curios to learn to fish with bait-caster reels, because i saw how many bird-nest have the fisherman's fishing with bait-cast reels and because i don't see people catching more fish comparative with spinning reels. Many time i am fishing with tinny braid(4 lb.,6 lb.)and you can fish with this line with bait-caster.

You are the expert i need to talk to! I want to use fly rod blanks to build spinning travel rods. I talked few people about it. Some say yes, and other say no. I was told they would break easily If used as spinning rods. Is it true ? I know that warranty would be voided, If built as spinning rod. Do you have any recommendations beside Sage and G Loomis? They are too expensive.
