ive recently been fishing around in the cibolo creek for some gar ive seen there. I have seen spotted ones from about 4-6inches to probably around 2 feet, and (what appears to be) an alligator gar thats 2 1/2 - 3 feet. last time i got one to take my bait i could see them swimming around near the surface... then my drag cap fell off and the spool fell in and it all went down hill from there. so anyway i was wondering if there are any places in the san antonio area, or within an hour or two away that have a larger gar population, also some tips on how to fish for them when they are not near the surface would be nice any help would be greatly appreciated

Wow, that sounds like something that would happen to Krista...Her tournament team name was Team Klutz for a reason!
Sorry about that, though hehe. Afraid I don't know any spots in that area. When I can't see gar, I've mostly just caught them fishing cut bait on the bottom. Half a shad, or half a bluegill for example. Of course you'll get lots of catfish that way, but that's rarely a bad thing, especially if you've got a cooler.

Lake Placid is a super Gar lake! There is an area just at the dam that separates lake Mcqueeney from Placid. During the months between June and September the Gar are thick in there. Use cut shad. You wont go wrong. Also the dam at the other end of the lake is good also.

yes at calliham state park"choke" i fish at the tent camping area the water is about 100yds from the campground i usually stay in 200 or 201 "campsite numbers". the water is shallow 0 to 10ft out to 100yds but the fish are there there lots of shad, carp, gaspergou, and cats food for gar!! from the campsite take the well kept trail to the main lake and cast out as far as you can.if you need carp as bait walk about 500yds to your left where the lake goes into a cove use canned sweet corn the water is only 3ft deep but theres alot of carp in there.fillet the carp and cut into 1 pound pieces yea 1 pound the bigger the bait the bigger the fish!! good luck and dont tell anyone my secret or ill hunt you down and use you for bait
